Director Brian De Palma's unflinching and excessive 1983 version of Scarface starring Al Pacino as Cuban immigrant-turned-drug kingpin Tony Montana, has been a lightning rod of controversy and popularity for decades. At first regarded as nothing more than violent trash by critics, Scarface quickly morphed into something much, much more as the years passed. Nowadays it is uttered as one of the best gangster films of all time, with Pacino's over-the-top tour de force performance still getting raves from fans as the absolute standard in the crime-fiction genre.
The Movie
If The Godfather is considered the best seasoned steak you've ever tasted, then Scarface without a doubt is your mouth-watering favourite cheeseburger of guilty pleasures. It tells the story of Cuban refugee Tony Montana's rise to power as a cocaine drug-lord and one of the most ruthless gangsters ever put to film. Yes it's violent (guys are hung from helicopters, chainsawed in showers, and riddled with semi-automatic bullets multiple times), but it's also hilarious in its dialogue and memorable one-liners. Scarface has plenty of edge, but it also knows how to handle character drama. Tony's ascension (although very entertaining) is not quite as fascinating as his spiral into coked-out destruction, and Pacino handles that poignancy well along co-star Michelle Pfeifer by playing bad people not deserving of good things in their life.
The film is unapologetic, bold, and unquestionably a classic that gets better and better each time you see it. Pacino's role as Montana is captivating, and an outstanding example of acting and performance at its overdramatic best. I also consider Scarface to be Brian De Palma's best film of all his directorial efforts, infusing the film with a stellar sense of cinematic scope and vision.
