The original Supreme Commander game was released in July 2007, as the 'spiritual successor' to real-time strategy classic Total Annihilation. It was a game hotly anticipated - GameSpot alone wrote eighteen previews prior to its release - and met with almost universal acclaim by fans and critics alike. Hence, there was considerable expectation for the sequel, Supreme Commander 2, when it was released for the PC and XBox 360 in March 2010 - however, in many respects it fails to live up to the legacy of the original game.

Increased Use of Plot

The main evolution from Supreme Commander to it's sequel has been billed as the increased use of storyline and plot - perhaps as a reaction to the increasingly epic cut-scene based stories of the Command & Conquer titles, which have escalated in recent releases almost to soap-opera levels. In defence of C&C, while their storylines may have been utterly barmy and over-the-top, at least they were a bit of fun; Supreme Commander 2 plays out along much more predictable, hackneyed lines.

The UEF campaign, for example, features a commander who goes rogue because his wife and child are in an Illuminate colony and he just has to do what's right, dammit. It comes off like something out of a bad Hollywood action film - without any of the tongue-in-cheek charm of the C&C series - and the Cybran and Illuminate campaigns fare little better.
