Many of the great cities in the world have a man made structure that is easily identifiable with that city. The Eiffel Tower, the Coliseum and the Golden Gate Bridge are synonymous with the cities where they stand. Each serves, or served a practical purpose, each looks good on a post card and each makes a logical starting point for locals to use when giving directions.

Prior to 1960, the Pacific Northwest city of Seattle, Washington had no such structure. But, with the World's Fair coming to town in a couple years, the movers and shakers of Seattle decided that things had to change. Plans were drawn, funds were raised, and ground was broken. Two years later, Seattle had its landmark.
