Tammi Terrell was born Thomasina Winifred Montgomery on April 29, 1945 in Philadelphia. She performed in talent shows while still child, besting adult competition. Barely out of puberty, she sang with the likes of Gary U.S. Bonds and Patti Labelle.

Montgomery signed with Scepter/Wand Records at age 15, releasing her first single, “If You See Bill” in 1961. Her work with Scepter caught the attention of James Brown. She recorded several singles for Brown’s label and went on tour with him as part of his revue. Montgomery’s family ended her professional and romantic relationship with Brown because she was still a minor and he had an explosive, violent temper.

Motown owner Berry Gordy saw Montgomery perform live with Jerry Butler in 1965 and signed her to his label. Gordy thought Thomasina Montgomery wasn’t a catchy enough, so in honor of her favorite song, Debbie Reynolds’ “Tammy,” Montgomery changed her name to Tammi Terrell.
