Friday the 13th had a lot more than superstition going for it this year, especially in the video game industry. A number of large developments have materialized this week.
Merger Talks
Two separate game publishers are on the verge of being absorbed into other companies. First off Japanese publisher Namco-Bandai has announced that it will be acquiring D3 Publisher. D3 is best known for the hit game Puzzle Quest, which was released for DS, PSP and Xbox Live Arcade.
The deal includes all of D3’s international arms, as well as the developer, Vicious Cycle.
The other big merger news of the week was the revelation that Square-Enix has made a bid for SCi, the company that owns Eidos Interactive. SCi has been having trouble for more than a year and rumors of a high-profile suitor have been making the rounds since the beginning of 2009.
Square-Enix has been actively seeking ways to increase their presence outside of Japan and feels the purchase of Eidos will help them in that endeavor. Eidos is most well-known for the Tomb Raider franchise.
Harmonix Sues Konami
In the ongoing battle for music game supremacy, Harmonix Music Systems, which is owned by MTV Games and Viacom, sued Konami Digital Entertainment over what Harmonix claims is patent infringement, according to a report by Bloomberg.
