Morrowind Goty Xbox Review

Skyrim is less than a month away and each and everyday seems to be getting longer and longer. There are two games this holiday that I am excited for and those would be SW: The Old Republic and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I am a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls series and are some of my favorite games I’ve ever played. I spent most of my pre-teen life playing Morrowind GOTY on my Xbox, countless hours running around the vast land exploring and doing quests. I hate to admit though I never fully understood what I was doing, at least that’s how I feel today. I’m pretty sure I never finished the main quest as a child and all I did was do random side quests and do other things, but I still gave away 100s of hours of my life to that game. Replaying Morrowind today though I really even love the game more. I feel like I understand the workings of the game and and even have more fun, even though now I have lost a bit of interest in randomly exploring. Move onto Oblivion. When the game was first announced I was filled with joy, I was so excited to explore a new land and have the same joy I once shared with Morrowind at the start. Even though I still think Morrowind is a highly superior game than Oblivion I still wasted my life away playing it. I played roughly 1000 hours, the first 300 hours were played as my Dark Elf, however he soon met his demise as a Vampire, and this was before the time when they patched the cure quest to actually WORK. I couldn’t stand not being able to play during the day so I decided to scrap that character entirely. My second character was a Breton who played the role of a Battle Mage. This was the character I spent my most time playing. I maxed all his major skills to 100 and almost all of his minor skills are maxed as well. This brings in Oblivion’s fault though, everyone levels with you. I never actually felt powerful, even though I had the best equipment in the game. Lowly monsters were still a challenge. I don’t understand the point of a leveling system if you don’t become more powerful than lesser beings. The joy of leveling is finding you are now more powerful and able bodied to take on a challenge. Oblivion took this joy away. With news that Skyrim would be scraping this system entirely though made me even more excited. Todd Howard as quoted saying that Skyrim has what made Morrowind magical, which sells it for me. The exploration and wonder of Morrowind and improved combat and graphics of Oblivion in my mind will make an amazing game. I expect to triple my played time in Skyrim and enjoy every second of it.
